While the losses of Tim Gardner, OL, and Will Dawkins, S, aren't quite earth-shaking, they are significant nonetheless.

Dawkins was the starter at the Husky position during the Spring Game. And Gardner, with his athleticism, seemed to have NFL written all over him, if only he would have channeled it.

Both were in good academic standing, according to the notice of their release. So what happened? In 2015, Dawkins had some sort of issue with an NCAA rule. Could that have played a factor? With Gardner, it's a deepening puzzle. Apparently, something was going on, of which were not privy to.

At any rate, they're both gone. DaVondre Love will slide in the backup role to Dimitric Camiel at RT. Love is supposedly doing well. What's needed is for someone to break out at OG to complement Dan Feeney. That might have been Gardner, but now several players are in the mix. As for the hybrid LB/S Husky position, it also appears wide open. Jayme Thompson is probably the front runner. He's currently listed at 188 lbs., which is more CB weight than safety. Getting up to 205 or 210 will be important, all the more so if he can keep his speed up.

Thanks for posting and contributing, we appreciate it!

I love the toughness and attitude Thompson will bring to the defense and I also consider him the front-runner for the Husky position. For what it's worth, I always have and I don't think the coaches were relying on Dawkins to be a starter (or even to be a primary back-up). One name that I know many are dismissing but I don't think they should be: Ben Bach. Bach clearly gained the admiration of Tom Allen during Spring practice and it would not surprise me at all to see him get significant snaps as a member of the secondary (most likely at Husky). I don't know if he'll end up ahead of Thompson or not but I feel he will see extensive playing time this coming season.
