Thomas Allen became the fourth member of the 2017 recruiting class. This class will probably be a bit smaller than ones we have seen in the immediate past but it is still reasonable to expect the coaching staff will try to bring in a total of 16-20 players total. That means there's probably anywhere from 12 to 16 spots remaining. How do you think the staff will try to fill this class? What positions are most needed? Which positions do you think they won't need to focus on for this class? Share any thoughts you have on the 2017 class in this thread...things will probably pick up this month as camps begin and players take visits.

With the departures of Tim Gardner and Will Dawkins, the 2017 class might be somewhat larger than initially projected. Could even reach the the 25 limit, but more likely will be around 22.

Defense will be the priority, and will account for the majority of recruits. Position breakdowns might be as follows:

Defense

3–4 DT
3 DE
3 LB
5–6 DB

Offense

1 QB
1 RB
1 TE
2–3 WR
3–4 OL

That equals 22 on the low end, and 26 on the high.

Thanks for posting! I think your class breakdown is well thought-out and pretty close to my line of thinking.

3-4 DT (Minor is a good start but they've got to load up here)
3 DE (Beery and Tramar Reece are guys I'm intrigued by)
3 LB (Thomas Allen is one)
5-6 DB (I'm not sure they'll bring in this many, there's already a lot of underclassmen here on the depth chart but Bryant Fitzgerald is someone the coaches really like the potential of)

OT Tyler Knight is the only offensive player brought in so far. I'm guessing things begin picking up in July.

The coaches need to really focus on Inside LBs, DL, and OLB [Safeties] to fit the 4-2-5 of our new defense.  We will graduate a number of ILBs so unless there are backups I am unfamiliar with ILB will be a priority.  IU now has the roster stacked with players that fill out the roster so they need to have a balanced class in 2017.  I hope we see a more talented group than in the past which I think will happen if the team is successful this year.

One other point is every year under Wilson the recruiting picks up in the last few months so I expect this year won't be any different.
